About Loch Lao

The Loch Lao Traditional Music Society (LLTMS) is charitable organisation based in Andersonstown, in the city of Belfast, dedicated to the promotion of Irish Traditional music and song. The LLTMS was founded in November 2004 although most of the members had already beeen playing together for many years. In 1992 a number of local musicians formed a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann which took the name "Loch Lao" (pronounced "Lough Lee") from the ancient Irish name for Belfast Lough. After a period of dormancy, the Loch Lao branch was revived by Patrick Davey in 1996 and from then until 2004 Loch Lao continued to operate as a branch of Comhaltas.

At the 2004 AGM of the Loch Lao branch, which was held in November, the decision was taken to establish Loch Lao as an independent organisation, and so The Loch Lao Traditional Music Society was born. Charitable status was subsequently acquired for the LLTMS.

The LLTMS has a current membership of over 200, the majority of whom are active musicians aged between 7 and 25 years. The Senior members meet for a session every Monday night and the Junior members meet once a month for our popular family session. All members regularly participate in a range of other events including concerts, sessions and other performances - see our event page for full details of all forthcoming events.

Membership of the LLTMS is open to everyone with an interest in Irish traditional music and song, and we especially welcome family membership. Full membership details are available from our
membership page.
